Musicians Describe Everyone Orchestra →

Spent Grain: Spent Grain is a band born of rock 'n roll, raised by funk and soul, existing comfortably in the rolling hills of Jam Band Land.Spent Grain mashes rock, funk, blues, and jazz to craft their own unique brew.
“Spent Grain is a big picture rock n roll band,” says John Dermody, a local music enthusiast. “Their songs are filled with details and developed with intricate structure… Watching them live, you know you’re seeing a powerful band go to work.”
Spent Grain’s original music distills the bounce of funk, the improvisational spirit of jazz, and the power of rock n roll down to a fresh yet familiar sound. They soar from structured songs into shape-shifting improvised sections that make every live version unique. Constant interplay between the five musicians makes Spent Grain as conversational as they are unpredictable. Charlie Mason’s blazing guitar lines compliment Tom McCaffery’s jazzy piano stylings and funky synthesizers. Matt Mulville keeps the band buoyed, even on the deepest sonic expeditions. His driving bass locks in with Edmund Barrington’s thunderous drumming and Pat Allen’s bouncing guitar to form a rock-solid rhythm section. Allen’s dynamic singing and clever lyrics draw listeners into the world of the song and connect with the humanity of his characters.
Though a typical set is mostly original material, Spent Grain draws from a huge catalogue of covers to pay homage to the artists that have influenced them. Whether it’s a classic hit or a deep cut, Spent Grain interprets the music with their own flavor and feel. Past audiences have seen them cover: Son Seals, Dave Brubeck, The Talking Heads, The Beatles, The Meters, The Gorillaz, Allen Toussaint, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Phish, Swamp Dogg, Freddie McGregor, Jimmy Cliff, Johnny Cash, Amos Milburn, BT Express, Eric Burden & War, Bob Dylan, The Doors, and many others.
Spent Grain’s self titled album is their first studio project and is in production now at Farmhouse Funk Studio in Cazenovia, NY. It’s a collection of originals written between 2015 and 2018 and developed during their two summer-long residencies at Critz Farms in Cazenovia. This year Spent Grain is picking up steam, playing favorite local haunts like The Westcott Theater, Funk n Waffles Syracuse, Sterling Stage Kampitheater, and Critz Farms. Stay tuned!
